Overview

This archival collection consists of documents of the Trust Administration of Cultural Property at the Munich Chief Finance Directorate. These include older archival holdings/classifications such as the documentation of the allied Monuments Men in the files of the Central Collecting Points and the German internal restitution authorities (Bundesamt für innere Restitution) as well as the Nazi organizations involved in the art theft, such as the so-called "Sonderauftrag Linz" and the "Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg" (ERR).

Content

  • Correspondence with other government authorities, art dealers, private owners, and museums regarding the acquisition of artworks. Includes invoices, payment instructions, etc.
  • Inventories of confiscated, secured, or otherwise acquired collections.
  • Documents concerning the confiscation and safeguarding, as well as the distribution of collections.
  • Documents relating to the “protection of Archives, Libraries, and Art” in the occupied territories, especially the occupied western territories and the “return” of former German-owned art holdings.
  • Documents concerning the recuperation of artworks and other protective measures during the war (transport, loading and crate lists).
  • Documents regarding the furnishing of museums and authorities as well as NSDAP buildings, with confiscated art collections and furniture.
  • Documents concerning the securing of artworks after 1945 (especially card indexes, forms, lists).
  • Registration of restitution claims, processing and, or the settlement of restitution applications.
  • Investigations into the provenance and whereabouts of artworks.
  • Applications for the release of artworks and inquiries about the whereabouts of artworks.
  • Compensation for those affected by restitution.
  • General, legal and procedural questions relating to restitution, especially with regard to the return of art property to Austria and Italy.
  • Register of restitutions known to the TVK (Treuhandverwaltung von Kulturgut, the Trust Administration of Cultural Property).
