Visual Search
The Visual Search provides access to a test corpus of approximately 380,000 images from German Sales catalogues. It allows you to search for visually similar images across this extensive collection of auction and sales catalogue illustrations.
Background
This visual search builds on segmented images created within a technical feasibility study conducted by Fraunhofer IPK in 2020 for the Landschaftsverband Rheinland (LVR) in cooperation with the Arbeitskreis Provenienzforschung e.V. (AKP e.V. | Association for Provenance Research). The project was further developed and evaluated by KPF.NRW, though it was discontinued following a cost-benefit analysis.
The new approach is currently being used as a test case for future visual searches in archival holdings. It builds on VGG Image Search.
Corpus
A total of 380,000 images were extracted from 9,118 digitized auction catalogues (as of May 2021).
The corpus covers approximately two-thirds of the German Sales catalogues. For comprehensive research, we recommend consulting additional resources such as Heidelberg German Sales or the Getty Provenance Index.
